The Guide to:

  1. Minimal Makeup
  2. Minimal Effort
  3. Minimal Time

As an eighteen-year-old with a bit too much time on her hands before the hustle of university, I have taken this break to perfect (to whatever measure) the “Daily Make-Up Look”. I think this procedure (yes because dammit make-up takes skill) differs according to your features and the amount of effort you’re willing to put in while you’re blurry-eyed in the morning so this is what I’ve come up with! (This is also acting as a sort of reminder to me in case I one day decide to go crazy with eyeshadow)

Base up! I find that a clear complexion (or faking one) is the best canvas for whatever make up you’re intending to put on. If my skin decides to be non-hormonal, I usually start off with Philosophy’s Hope in a Jar Gel Cream which is an oil-free formula that is well suited for combination skin. Recently, I have been transitioning to Etude House Zero Sebum gel cream (more updates on how that goes). I find the consistency and texture is similar for both the creams despite the difference in price point. Afterwards, I go in with a concealer, to mask my IB battle scars. Strangely enough, my concealer is from Muji in the lightest shade they offer because I haven’t seen the sun in approximately two years. The colour match is really great for me and the coverage light and doesn’t cake in my undereye. However, thanks to the online rave, I’ve recently picked up Maybelline’s Instant Age Rewind under eye concealer in Pale. I reserve judgement as of now.

Brow-ed. I start by brushing out my brows. At this stage, I sometimes take a tweezer to pluck any stray hairs that I see, but not too excessively as I get red very easily. Brush upwards and towards the tail of your brow and take a brow pencil (or pomade, gel or whatever you prefer) and fill in the empty spots! For me, all I do is extend the tail of my brow. I like the front of my brows to be less defined for a more natural look. (do u have a favourite brow mine is the left) Brush again using a spoolie to blend it all out.

Liner. Disclaimer: I have tried all kinds of eyeliner from gel to pencil to brush to felt tips and I find I like a pencil on most days. I like the subtle smokey eye it gives me when it smudges from the humidity but it’s very easy to clean up (tip: if you take an edge of a folded tissue paper and wipe upwards toward your brow you can upkeep the wing heh) For daytime looks, I stick to a brown liner as…well…it’s just my preference I suppose but I think it’s universally flattering. I use the Dior Crayon Eyeliner Waterproof in Brun (brown la) and I line my upper and outer eye. I sometimes go in with the Clio Kill Brown Waterproof Eyeliner in the inner orders. I have hooded eyes (??) and that doesn’t give me a ton of lid space so I prefer liquid eyeliners that allow me to get a really fine line. Both these eyeliners hold up really well in Singapore’s humidity!

Glo-up. This is my favourite part, next to red lipstick :’) I use Son and Park’s Highlighter Cube, it’s a pink toned highlighter cream to powder consistency that I love. I also cheat a bit and use an Etude House brush with Urban Decay’s Last Sin (it’s an eyeshadow from the Vice palette) on days that I’m feeling particularly fancy. The UD pigmentation and consistency is well… legendary.

Matte out. Okay this header is misleading because I don’t really enjoy matte lipsticks on a day to day basis: they’re hard to maintain, are sometimes too intense and really drying. I usually go with a lip tint. I really like Benefit’s Benetint but I think it’s stupidly pricy so I’ve been using the Innisfree Creammellow Lipstick (I usually pick a mauve-y shade but you do u) as well as the The Body Shop Lip & Cheek Velvet Stick which changes colour according to your original lip colour.

Well, I hope that’s been helpful and thank you for joining me on Procrastination Wednesday but it’s now Thursday.

how to be a true romantic: a breakdown

how to be a true romantic: a breakdown

part one.

they say, the mark of a true romantic is how bright your eyes shine when you’re in love.

but for me, it’s how your eyes refuse to stop shining upon seeing the remains of your heart on the floor

part two.

i remember our time together clearest in the shower

maybe the mist allows for my mind, ever churning and clicking and forming new connections and assumptions to be muddled for long enough to catch your eye across the room again; the dimpled smile and your attempt at a wink, contorting your face

maybe it’s the way i turn the temperature of the water up too high so much so that i can no longer feel the burn on my skin and only then, finally, i can pretend that the stroke across my collarbone are your fingers searing the memory of your thumbprint into my skin so that every time, no matter what touches the surface of me, it will always be you

so i turn the knob of the faucet further to the right and sometimes, on bad days, i think i can hear you singing a song about her

part three.

the artist is present (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OS0Tg0IjCp4)

in his irises i can see the promises that were made the promises that lapsed and the promises that remain

i can barely hear the click of a shutter, one, slowly, and then all at once
but the cheeky grin and little flutter of his jaw
the way he sits up straighter
makes me feel like i am twenty, again
beyond the wall of brick and stone
the blood of what has passed trickles
and flows between us, charged, poignant,
clear
it is not a gentle, beautiful wave on a cool day
it is a jolt
it is painful in the most beautiful way
it is almost as though my ribs have decided to retire and rips through
i think i can feel it
it’s my right ventricle tearing slowly away from the tissue of the rest of my heart
but i revel in that knowledge
in the acute awareness of the pain
i allow myself weakness
i allow myself this chance
and i lean forward, further empowering this phantom pain in my chest
and.

part four.
and so you say i love you
in different ways,
trying to hide what you can’t bring yourself to say
you hide it between cards and
in the limp artery of the ribbon
carefully tangled around small, appropriate gifts
hoping it’s enough to catch his attention
that he’ll notice you’re tearing yourself up
for him
dressing for cold weather

dressing for cold weather

hullo, this is sort of like a sub-post from my travel post for helsinki, finland. as you are aware, it’s bloody cold in finland, especially in helsinki and in the northern areas, like lapland, temperatures drop as low as -29 (as it is currently) thankfully, when i was in visiting in june, the weather was fairly pleasant, ranging from -4 to 3 degrees Celsius. here are some outfits ish that i put together! shout out to my mother for introducing me to COS (sweater extravaganza) and as always, having a excellent taste in winter wear :>

i think what’s most crucial for sub zero weather is layering since most indoors areas in helsinki have very effective heating and if you were to have one incredibly warm layer, you’ll be quite literally toasted. if you are going to somewhere you are expecting a constant sub zero environment, i would suggest acquiring thermals. i purchased mine from uni qlo (Extra Warm Heat Tech with a fleece inlay) and it really helped to keep me warm and snuggly.

usually, this is how i would layer for tops:

1. Heat Tech Camisole

2. Thermal

3. Sweater Shirt

4. Ultra Light Down

5. Overcoat

and similarly for bottoms:

1. Heat Tech Stockings

2. Thermal

3. Wool Tights / Trousers

4. Tall boots

i understand that heat tech seems like a scam but let’s just say that the japanese do know what they’re doing. also keep in mind that beanies, scarfs and gloves are not just a fashion accessory and you should pick those of good material, i find that those acrylic scarfs don’t really do anything but look good. so pick one of a tight knit and good length. i personally chose gloves that went well past my wrist (so that i could tuck them into my sweater) but if you have leather gloves, you should be good to go as well.

furthermore, i know it seems a bit excessive  to wear an ultra light down and thEN another coat but my monki overcoat was not waterproof nor a windbreaker which are the elements i felt added warmth to the outfit. however, if you’re wearing a coat similar to my esprit one, which is waterproof, a windbreaker as well as a down coat, then you’re less likely to wear the ultra light down inside unless you’re planning to travel out to sea. (yes, you can take a ferry to estonia and porovo from helsinki!!)

thank you for reading, i should have another post on food in helsinki up soon!

helsinki, finland, museums,

helsinki, finland, museums,

hello, i think it has been an adequate amount of time since my trip and now i feel that i can properly write about my trip rather than just spamming my keyboard frantically trying to convey how much i like the culture and the people in finland. in this post, i think i will mainly attempt to cover my trip to the multiple musuems (perhaps i will in fact, choose to lump them together but it is rather time consuming to evaluate them separately) as well as my encounters with the foreigners and locals in the centre of helsinki. furthermore, please excuse the lack of pictures in this post, i will try to get the photographs sorted in an update.

so, yes, welcome to what may be a post on how much xiu ting loves finland.

in case you’re interested or planning to visit finland anytime soon, here’s a complied list on the museums that i managed to find with a few others that i’m planning on going to the next time i return, marked with an asterisk (no seriously have you tried to read road names in finnish) (with a slightly marred sense of direction) (i’m surprised i didn’t get lost)

Museums

  • Design Museum of Finland
  • Amos Anderson Art Museum
  • Antenum
  • Helsinki City Planning Gallery
  • Sinebrychoff Art Museum
  • Museum of Architecture *
  • Museum of Photograhy *

out of all the museums that i have mentioned, the only one to showcase what struck me as contemporary pieces (pardon if my lingo is wrong) was the design museum which was nestled behind an ancient cathedral. i think it was a representation of the lifestyle of the finnish. clean, minimal and practical as was what i deduced from the exhibition on finnish interior design in the basement. i genuinely enjoyed spending time at this museum as in the upper halls there were quite a few rooms with different styles; from a laboratory to a room full of wall installations (porcelain doves, cracked dish made of clay) and to be quite frank, i didn’t stand in front of each piece trying to deduce the meaning of the artist and i honesty just tried to enjoy the texture and vibrance of many of the works.

one of my favourite exhibitions was of the “development of finnish furniture”, haven for the IKEA nerd in me, somewhere, not very deep down. in these few rooms, there were some backstory of the timeline of when these objects were birthed and let’s be honest, you don’t want to hear that (well i did but maybe it was the snow clogging up my sinuses i don’t know). it begun with a collection of sofa/recliners and followed with a glass display of well, glassware with incredibly intricate detailing. afterwards, it was a hanging (literally) of dresses of not much shape but in very neon colours. in retrospect, i spent the most time in the room with a jumble of lights that seemed to have been shipped directly from IKEA. they were very wood centred pieces, as expected from finland where quality almost always equals to woodwork. these wood chandeliers took on geometrical shapes with the cone and circle taking the lead with majority of the pieces. and of course, nokia. the blood, sweat and tears (more recently) of finland. there was a glass case of the (replica?) of the first ever nokia phone as well as its decedents. (i managed to spot one of my mother’s older nokia phone woOOoOoo)

that’s it for the design museum! i would highly recommend you to take a peek in this one for €5….if you can find it. otherwise, take a stroll around the area, known as the Design Destrict where i managed to find a small photography exhibition and a flagship store of the famous Rifle Paper Co. which is named Papershop where you can pick up beautiful wrapping paper and card stock…….if you’re as crazed about stationery as i am..whoops….

as for Amos Anderson Art Museum (http://www.amosanderson.fi/), i encourage you to check out the current exhibitions before you go so you can get a glimpse of what to expect. ok, break out for a minutes so i can say THEY HAVE A CAGE ELEVATOR ITS VERY COOL GO RIDE THE TOP FLOORS SO THE GUARDS DONT JUDGE YOU no seriously they stop every half a floor and make cool dinging sounds and there is a fricking sofa in the elevators IMG_3776

apologies for the slightly shitty quality of said picture because the security were look dubiously at me as though i was going to steal the lift (uhm as if couGHS) but yes it was fantastic and i was very hyped about the cage lift. so yes, go, experience your own vintage elevator for free at Amos Anderson Art Museum which is located right behind FORUM mall.

My sticker collection begins.

moving on to Atenum, this was probably the most painting heavy museum i visited since most of the other ones also featured statues and other non traditional works, atenum, located opposite Stockmann and the Swedish Theatre, was located in a fairly modern setting with Kampi lurking in the back holds some of the most respected pieces in Finland. so here are some pictures (i was actually more interested in the architecture of the building because the ceiling and banister details are similar to the ones at the Louvre and the pillars are incredibly craved for such a large piece of marble slab.)
